WR: Minnesota Defeats No. 15 Northwestern 28-10

February 4, 2005 – The seventh-ranked Golden Gopher wrestling team (7-6, 1-2) defeated No. 15 Northwestern, 28-10, on Friday night in Evanston, Ill. Coming off its first win in 37 years against Iowa last Sunday, the Wildcats (9-2, 2-2) managed just three wins in the dual meet. For the third meet in a row, Minnesota wrestled without sixth-ranked Roger Kish at 184 pounds. Kish is out with a skin infection.

“I was proud of the way our guys wrestled tonight,” head coach J Robinson. “Northwestern came into tonight’s match with a lot of momentum, but we were able to overcome that. With Kish out of the lineup, we needed guys to step up. Danny (Williams) came through at 149 pounds for us, while C.P. (Schlatter) looked strong at 157 pounds.”

Northwestern took a 3-0 lead as 14th-ranked Matt Delguyd earned a 5-2 decision against redshirt freshman Matt Koz at 197 pounds. The Golden Gophers responded with seven straight wins to put the dual away.

Second-ranked Cole Konrad extended his career-long winning streak to 16 with a 1-0 decision against Dustin Fox at heavyweight. Konrad scored a second-period escape and then rode Fox the entire period to earn the win. Konrad improved to 28-2 on the season.

In the lone matchup featuring ranked wrestlers, fifth-ranked Bobbe Lowe gave Minnesota a 6-3 lead with a 5-2 decision against ninth-ranked John Velez at 125 pounds. Lowe improved to 3-0 in his career against Velez.

Redshirt freshman Mack Reiter continued his stellar rookie season with his team-leading 11th pin of the season. He earned a fall in 5:43 against Dan Quintela at 133 pounds. Reiter improved to 29-3 overall and 13-0 in the dual meet season. Seven of his 13 dual meet victories have given Minnesota bonus points.

Following a forfeit by Northwestern at 141 pounds, sophomore Danny Williams rallied for an 8-7 victory against Greg Hagel at 149 pounds. Williams was filling in for redshirt freshman C.P. Schlatter. Schlatter was ranked as high as 11th in the country at 149, but made the move to 157 last week.

Wrestling just his second career match at 157 pounds, Schlatter posted an 11-8 decision against Mike Kimberlin. Prior to Schlatter’s move to 157, the Golden Gophers were 0-11 at that weight class with eight of those matches resulting in bonus points.

Junior Matt Nagel put the match away with a dominating 14-3 major decision against Nick Hayes at 165 pounds. It was just the second time in 13 dual meets that Nagel met an unranked opponent.

The Wildcats closed out the match with victories at 174 and 184 pounds. Fourth-ranked Jake Herbert earned a 6-1 decision against redshirt freshman Gabriel Dretsch at 174 pounds. Returning from injury, it was Dretsch’s first match since Dec. 29. Mike Tamillow closed out the dual with a 13-5 major decision against redshirt freshman Jeremy Larson. Larson was making his second career start in place of Kish at 184 pounds.

The Golden Gophers will look to make it two in a row when they travel to West Lafayette, Ind., to face Purdue on Saturday night.
