Badgers and Spartans Wrestle to 16-16 Tie
MADISON, Wis. – The 12th-ranked Wisconsin wrestling team earned its second tie of the season splitting the match to No. 18 Michigan State, 16-16, Sunday afternoon at the UW Field House. Wisconsin wrestlers Tom Clum, Tyler Laudon, Tyler Turner, Jake Donar and Brady Reinke all earned victories to bring UW’s record to 7-3-2 (0-3-1 Big Ten).
“I give credit to Michigan State because they came out to wrestle,” said head coach Barry Davis. “Will I take a tie, yes, but we got to step up. Not all of our guys are stepping up at the one time and right now we need to do that.”
At 133 pounds, Tom Clum defeated Michigan State’s Ryan Froese 19-8, giving Clum his third major decision victory of the season. In the match, Clum recorded seven takedowns, three nearfall points, an escape and 3:04 minutes of riding time. Next up was senior Tyler Laudon. Laudon needed overtime to defeat third-ranked Andy Simmons by a 5-4 victory. In the first period of overtime, Laudon quickly earned an escape point giving him the win.
“I think Laudon went out and kept his poise real good. He was in good position and going against the third ranked guy in the country, he did well,” said Davis.
Competing at 157, Tyler Turner defeated Matt McCarty 9-3 improving his overall record to 18-5. Turner earned two escapes, a takedown and three penalty points to seal the victory. Next at 165 was Cuba City, Wis., native, Jake Donar. Donar earned two reversals, three nearfall points and a stall point en route to an 8-2 decision win.
Senior Brady Reinke stayed undefeated at 184 pounds by taking a 10-7 win over MSU’s Joe Williams. Reinke recorded two takedowns, two escapes, two nearfall points and a reversal. Reinke is the only undefeated Badger at 9-0.
