Wildcats’ rally stuns Hawkeyes
FROM REGISTER STAFF REPORTS
Evanston, Ill. – The Iowa wrestling team’s 35-match winning streak over Northwestern ended with a 22-19 Big Ten Conference dual meet loss Saturday night.
The Hawkeyes, falling to 6-4 overall and 1-2 in the Big Ten, built a 19-3 lead after winning four of the first five weights.
Needing only one more victory to most likely wrap up the dual victory, Iowa couldn’t finish.
Northwestern (9-1, 2-1 Big Ten) responded by winning the final five matches, including Mike Tamillow’s 5-3 upset of Paul Bradley at 184 pounds and a pair of narrow decisions from Dustin Fox at heavyweight and John Velez at 125 pounds.
Fox edged freshman heavyweight Matt Fields, 7-6, while Velez built an early lead over Charlie Falck and held on for a 10-8 victory in the final match.
The Hawkeyes got pins from junior Joe Johnston (157) and redshirt freshman Mark Perry (165), a major decision from junior Ty Eustice (149) and a decision from junior Mario Galanakis (133) to build the early lead.
Northwestern’s last victory over Iowa was by an 18-6 score in 1968.
Iowa also lost at second-ranked Illinois, 25-7, on Friday.
Iowa wrestles at Penn State (7-7, 1-2 Big Ten) on Friday and at Ohio State (6-6, 0-2) next Saturday.
