RPW History (Part 2) – The Plan
Last week I told how RPW came to be. It would be cool if it were some grand story complete with soundtrack, elven princesses, and wizards with swords. But actually, it was a rather normal day and a typical conversation. Of course, if RPW is such a big hit that they make that fateful day into part of a movie, Matt and I will claim it was dramatic, emotional, and that we had to battle a thousand orcs. After all, is that not how a movie tells us it has to be?
“The world has changed
I can feel it in the water and the air
Things that should not have been forgotten were lost
History became legend, legend became myth…”
Oh well, in a couple minutes the plan for RPW was laid out and Matt told me he would back me. I wonder now if he would do so again as we trudge into Mordor under the weight of the ring. Like Frodo and Sam, two hobbits within a giant world filled with fell men.
The plan was this: to march the ring right into the television world of Mount Doom and cast it into the fire of Neilson ratings. Unlike Frodo and Sam, we at least researched the history of the ring, er wrestling, and found its true history. We learned how it had once been a powerful sport and why it had fallen into the hands of the evil Nazgul and their dark lord Sauron. We found out there was a chance to bring cleansing to the world. Okay, I’m embellishing a little here.
Having talked to Wayne Gernstein, the last fallen hero to attempt the task, we learned valuable information. We knew we could fund a pilot, a test for television, video it, and take it television executives and the world of wrestling so they can see the potential.
Upon an overwhelmingly successful pilot, we found ourselves in Rivendell and thought the quest was over. Little did we realize it had just begun. We quickly discovered the hardest task lay ahead. We really think we did enough that television and advertisers should have recognized the value of our ring, but they did not. We were faced with a difficult task.
“I will take the ring though I do not know the way.”
We worked for months to fine a guide, a friendly wizard, who could take us through the dark mines and treacherous world of tv, but alas our guide was not Gandalf, but Saruman. Precious time and money was wasted.
“The quest stands upon the edge of a knife
Stay but a little and it will fail to the ruin of us all.”
While many great tv men looked on and helped but little, we bravely refused to give up. Finally we found a true Ranger who knew the way. He did not carry a sword but came with a few Emmys. I don’t know how good Emmys are at cleaving orcs but it helps in the television world at least.
Before us another choice was laid. We must now carry the ring into the very land of Mordor ourselves.
“We must now take the paths few dare to tread.”
So here we are looking across the plain at this behemoth of a mountain, spewing forth magma. Actually, much of it is more like garbage in our opinion. But I digress.
As we crossed the plains and start to climb the mountain, an army assembles and take courage before the enemy’s gate. Two hobbits cannot change history by themselves. But if the Iowans of Gondor and the riders of Oklahoma unite with the Treebeards of California and the elves of Pennsylvania, something good is bound to happen. Add the stout hearted dwarf fans and veterans eagles of the past, and soon the army of orcs have a fight on its hands.
But it still comes down to the hobbits. Not just Matt and I, but you and your families. We hobbits have not sought the evil of money, fame, and power. Our gardens were the Olympics and true sport.
But great deeds await. Whisper it to your friends. Tune in, and not just watch, but dare to make a difference. As the golden lady of Lothlorien, bends down to speak with us, I think I hear her say.
“Even the smallest person can change the course of the future.”
