UNIVERSITY PARK — An Orefield man was charged with simple assault and related counts after he threw a bottle at a wrestling referee during a Penn State meet.
According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by police:
Police were sent to Penn State’s Rec Hall on Jan. 7 for a disturbance at the Penn State-Lehigh University match. There, they spoke to Michael Trenge, 54, of 5850 Horseshoe Road, who admitted to throwing a water bottle at the referee. He stated “that the official was stupid and that he made a bad call, disqualifying his son.”
Police also spoke to the official, who said he felt a sting on his back and showed police the 3-inch-by- 3-inch red mark on his back.
The charges have been mailed to Trenge, according to court papers. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 13.
