Wrestlers investigated for hazing

A complaint involving members of the Avoca-Hancock-Shelby-Tennant High School wrestling team is under investigation by the Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s office.
A-H-S-T Superintendent Chuck Scott said a parent filed the complaint with Avoca police March 8, and the police then asked for help from the sheriff.
“They said there’s been some hazing going on, “Scott said of the parent’s complaint.
The sheriff’s office contacted him on Wednesday, Scott said, and Avoca police returned on Thursday and Friday to conduct additional interviews.
The investigation is continuing, but Scott said Monday he could not say more because minors are involved.
Scott said he and Susan Peterson, the high school principal, have continued to meet with students, parents and coaches and hope to release a statement by the end of the week.
“We’re not going to take this and sweep it under the rug, “Scott said. “There will be consequences.”
“The actions of a few are totally unacceptable and will not be tolerated, “he said.
Officer Chad Dennler of the Avoca Police Department said he was referring all calls about the investigation to the Pottawattamie County Attorney’s office.
County Attorney Matt Wilber and Sheriff Jeff Danker confirmed the on-going investigation.
“There are some serious allegations that have been raised. We are investigating them, “Wilber said.
Wilber and Danker said they hope to have more to say by the middle to the end of the week.
“We’re taking this very seriously. We’re trying to talk to everybody we can, “Danker said.
