Velez breaks tie in final match for 22-19 Northwestern win
Junior John Velez shook off a shoulder injury and won the decisive match to push Northwestern over Iowa 22-19.
EVANSTON, Ill. – 21st-ranked Northwestern stunned eighth-ranked Iowa Saturday night in Welsh-Ryan Arena by defeating the Hawkeyes for the first time in over 37 years. The Wildcats clawed out from a 19-3 hole to tie the match at 19-19 heading into the final weight class. There, junior John Velez (pictured) brought the victory home by grinding out a 10-8 decision to put the `Cats on top 22-19.
