Josh Good enjoyed working matside
From the Ogden Reporter
His responsibilities included running bout sheets, mopping mats before and after each session, and towel boy. Below, he describes his experience:
Behind the scenes in “The Barn “by Josh Good
“Wrestlers, clear the mats! “Some people dream of the opportunity to be able to just walk across the mats of the State Wrestling Tournament, but I never thought I would get the opportunity to experience the atmosphere of the tournament from behind the scenes.
This year I had the chance to be one of the lucky people to work mat-side throughout the tournament.
Through all the hard work, I had many great opportunities to meet the important people who make the state tournament happen each year. The two main people I met were Al Beste and Dave Harty, who set up and run the state wrestling events. Rob Boley was the person who gave me the chance to work there. Being able to meet these men was a great opportunity.
While working, I was able to talk to many individuals. The most interesting person was a reporter from Don Bosco-Gilbertville. He told me a lot about the team, including what type of team they are and how they train. He said they were a good dual team and had good individual wrestlers. He also said how they have to take turns wrestling because their practice room is too small, but that doesn’t stop them from working hard.
There are 30 guys on the wrestling team and only 142 students in their high school. He said they look more like a football team than a wrestling team. The reporter told me that if they don’t make it to the State Duals, that they will still practice as if they did to give them more mat time.
Another great guy I met on a more personal basis was Coach Nick Fields from Woodward.
Between sessions we wrestled to keep in shape for the State Duals. Fields helped me out on a lot of different moves.
I look forward to hanging out next season with the guys I met, but not as a worker, as a qualifier for state. I plan to work hard in the off season in the weight room and in freestyle wrestling.
