The USA Wrestling’s Kids/Cadet Folkstyle National Championships are set for the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa, April 1-3. Champions at this event are recognized as the USA Wrestling folkstyle national champions for the year, a major achievement within youth wrestling.
Wrestling legend Dan Gable, among the nation’s most respected wrestlers and coaches, will make a special appearance to meet with the participants at the USA Wrestling Folkstyle National Championships.
Gable lost only one match in his entire high school and college career. He was a 1971 World champion and 1972 Olympic champion. As the head coach of the Univ. of Iowa, Gable set records with 15 NCAA team titles, including nine in a row. He coached three Olympic teams and five U.S. World Teams. His work ethic is legendary, and his ability to motivate others is respected worldwide.
The Kids/Cadet Folkstyle National Championships marks the end of the Ultimate Challenge Series, and the beginning of the quest for the coveted USA Wrestling Triple Crown award.
The Ultimate Challenge Series features 10 outstanding youth wrestling events hosted across the nation. This year, added emphasis has been given to the Folkstyle National Championships within the Ultimate Challenge Series. The top eight award winners will receive double the points for placing in USA Wrestling’s premier youth folkstyle event.
The Triple Crown is awarded to wrestlers who win the USA Wrestling national championships in folkstyle, freestyle and Greco-Roman during the same year. This has become the top honor in youth wrestling. Triple Crowns are awarded at the Midget, Novice, Schoolboy and Cadet levels each year.
Last year, 12 athletes won Kids Triple Crowns, including four Midgets, three Novices and five Schoolboy wrestlers. On the Cadet level, there was only one Triple Crown champion, Zachary Sanders of Minnesota.
Special effort has been placed on the 2005 Kids/Cadet Folkstyle National Champion-ships. There have been many improvements in the event operations this year, in order to provide an outstanding experience for wrestlers and their families.
There is still time for athletes to make the decision to attend this outstanding event and test themselves against other wrestlers from across the nation.
